The Ride to the polls is on the City on Saturday!

Transit to be free on Saturday
in bid to increase voter participation in election vote.

The City of Prince Rupert has announced that with the assistance of BC Transit, that the ride on the city's buses on Saturday will be free, offering up a welcome opportunity for those heading to the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre for election day.

While the notice has not as of yet been posted to the city website or twitter feed  (perhaps there is still a bit of work on communication required at City Hall when it comes to sharing these things) the Chamber of Commerce has offered up word of the transportation option for Saturday, through its weekly newsletter.

The hours of operation for the Free Ride on Saturday is from 8:35 AM to 6:45 PM.

The prospect of Free Transit was first suggested to Prince Rupert Council at the November 3rd Council session, as we outlined here.

The suggestion is designed to try and improve on the voter turnout for this years election, in past years the number of participants in the election process has been in the mid thirty percent range.

The plan to provide another incentive to get out the vote comes from similar options offered in Terrace and Kitimat.

Something which our readers first discovered from our background item about the Northwest initiatives from our post of October 31st.
