Plans for Mile 28 Highway 16 overpass project still in motion; Ministry spokesman

The Ministry of Transportation still has plans to move forward with the
Mile 28 crossing project between Terrace and Prince Rupert

A major improvement for Highway 16 is still on the books, though delayed after some technical issues and a change of government required a review for Mile 28 crossing project.

The topic of the status of the highway crossing came up during Monday's Prince Rupert City Council session, with Councillor Barry Cunningham raising the fate of the crossing with Darrell Gunn, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure point man for the Northwest based out of Terrace.

Mr. Gunn recounted some of the history of the project and noted that as far as he has been advised, the project will be moving forward.

From his review for Council he observed that the original tender had been pulled owing to language which needed to be addressed, related to technical language, as well as some First Nation incentive notes.

He noted that the current timeline for the overpass proposal has a target for tenders set for early 2019.

A video of the design features for the proposed crossing was posted to the Ministry of Transportation website in the fall of 2016.
