Prince Rupert City Council has given its approval to the first reading of a zoning amendment request for a proposed supportive housing residence on 11th Avenue East.

An approval which has set in motion a process that will see the proponent of the project move into the consultation phase of the application, with further progress on that element of the proposal to come in January.

As we noted in our preview of Council on Monday, the residence plan was included as part of the City's Agenda package for Monday's meeting and provided for an impressive amount of background information as to the nature of the operation of the residence, as well as the technical specifications required for a fifteen bed residence, complete with living amenities.

The proposed residence to be known as 333 Trinity House was described by the proponents as a place to provide for a safe, clean, recovery based home that will benefit, men, families and our community.

Councillor Blair Mirau provided his overview of the proposed project by taking to his Facebook page this week to lay out the path ahead for the proposal.

The proponent for the home will now have to provide for a public information session for the neighbouring community and as Council considers the project, a Public Hearing will also be required as the process moves forward.

The consultation phase in the New Year however may be one which offers up a fair bit of debate when it comes to the topic of a supportive housing facility in a residential area, at least if the early commentary to Mr. Mira's social media posting are any indication.

From his hopeful Facebook notes on the passing of the first reading, there appears to be a split in community opinion forming related to the proposed location for  the residence.
